8:30-9 a.m. Registration and continental breakfast
9-9:15Welcome and Introductions
9:15-10:45 a.m. Officer Safety: Recognizing and Responding to Dangerous and Potentially Dangerous Dogs We will describe basics of how dogs communicate, how to rapidly assess an encounter with a dog and the use of a force continuum in choosing a response that will be most appropriate to a variety of types of encounters.
10:45-11 a.m. Break
11 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Investigating Dogfighting: Part 1 We will cover the basics of how dogs are bred, raised and trained for fighting and the basic steps in planning and executing a dogfight investigation and raid
12:15-1:30 p.m. Lunch (Provided by Alfred State)
1:30- 3 p.m. Investigating Dogfighting: Part 2 Reviews what happens at a raid, evidence identification and collection, safe animal handling, examination of dogs, transport and housing and other considerations
3-3:15 p.m.Break
3:15-4:30 p.m. After the Raid We review case packaging of a successful dogfight prosecution, the role of expert witnesses in building the case, effective testimony and longer term evaluation, Housing and placement of seized dogs
4:30 -4:45 p.m. Questions and Answers/Wrap Up
